Whether you are a cat lover or a dog lover, this story will warm your heart. It has a sad beginning, but a heartwarming ending.
Phoenix-based Sunshine Dog Rescue rescued a dog they named Georgia. The Australian shepherd mix was found at a gas station near the U.S.-Mexico border, ABC reports.
They quickly learned that Georgia was pregnant. Unfortunately, all of Georgia’s puppies were born prematurely and did not survive. Anita Osa, founder of Sunshine Dog Rescue, says Georgia was heartbroken after losing all her pups.
“I had never seen a mama dog lose an entire litter before,” Anita said. “She was frantic and looking for those babies. It was so sad. She even tore up the mattress she was sitting on trying to find her babies.”
In hopes of putting Georgia on the road to recovery, Anita turned to Facebook to try to find animals in need of a nursing mother dog. She ended up with three newly orphaned kittens who needed a mother.
Anita said she initially wondered if a dog would accept kittens as babies. She was pleasantly surprised to see the bond they formed. “I introduced them to her gently,” Anita said. “I brought one in first and let her sniff it. She seemed to accept it, so I brought out the others. It was amazing how she instantly calmed down.”
Georgia even allows her new kittens to suckle her, although her milk production is low. “I don’t think the kittens have any idea that Georgia is a dog,” she added. “She nurses them and cleans them. The bond is very strong! It’s really something to see. She protects the kittens as if they were her own babies,” Anita said.
